Play Park- Refurbished and Re-Opened- Thanks to Kent Playing Fields Association and Tesco Bags of Help!

As part of their ongoing drive to provide recreational and sporting facilities for the local community Mersham Sports Club re-opened the children’s play park at their Flood Street ground last week-end.  “Whilst we had raised some of the money needed to fulfil this project the grant of £1000 from the Kent Playing Fields Association and the £2000 from the Tesco Bags for Life scheme were vital to us in achieving the target to refurbish and improve the play park for our local children” said club Chairman Kevin Burton.

The club is continuing to work on plans to acquire an adjacent plot of land, which will enable them to expand their existing sporting activities, and also on a project to replace their ageing building with a new Sports & Recreation Centre.  The club will be hosting an open day in June where residents from the surrounding area will be invited to take part in the sports that the club provides and see the exciting plans for future developments.

Club Receives National Lottery Funding

Mersham Sports Club has just been awarded nearly £10000 by The National Lottery Community Fund to help pay for improving communication with the local community.  Having recently gained planning approval from Ashford Borough Council for a Sports & Recreation Centre at the Flood Street ground the Club is hosting an Open Day on 23rd June where people will have the opportunity of taking part in the current sports that the Club provides and to hearing and seeing what the plans are for the future.

“We want people from the local area to come to the Open Day to see what we are aiming to achieve, as in the longer term we want to involve more sports and recreational groups in using the new facility.  We are keen to invite people who run local clubs or recreation groups and for them to see that the new Centre will provide a suitable base for their future activities” said Club Vice Chairman Fred Ambler.

Part of the grant will be used to create a new user friendly website which will allow playing members and the general public to keep abreast of the club plans.

Club Chairman, Kevin Burton said “This is a significant award for our club and I would like to thank all those who play the National Lottery which makes this grant possible”.

MSC Changes Club Status.

Following the EGM on Monday 17th December the club will be changing our Status from a CASC (Community Ammateur Sports Club) to a CIO (Charitable incorporated organisation).

For the majority of members this will not cause a lot of change, sporting sections will be running and operating as usual, it will however allow us access to more funding oppourtunities in the future to help with the development plans below.

Thanks must go to the Club committee for all their work on this, our mentors at Funding For All and Sarah Hartles for helping to re-write the club constitution.

Club Devlopment Plans

The Sports Club Committee has long term plans to improve the facilities and the services that we provide our members. We have been working towards these for the past decade and with the completion of phase 1, we are now able to move on to phases 2 and 3, plans are finally starting to come to fruition and hopefully in the not to distant future we will be near completion, providing fantastic facilities for all. Fulll details of the Clubs development plan and drawings of these are available by clicking here.

We need the support of all members if we are to acheive these plans, please support the club in d anyway you can by attending training and matches, supporting club events, volunteering if you can, even donations or sponsorship, any help would be greatly appreciated and help to acheive our goals for the benefit of all.

Phase 1- New Entrance

Phase one of the Club development Plans was completed in 2017, the building of a new safer entrance to  the ground and extending the car park, taking a lot longer than anticipated after various issues with build. This was financed by club funds a long with a donation of £5000 from the Parish Council at a cost of nearly £30,000.

Phase 2- Additional Land

Phase 2 involves the acquisition of additional land to expand our playing area. The current land is in constant use throughout the year and as a result is in desperate need of some TLC.

With the increased playing area we would also be able to provide more sporting provision for the local community and would not be so reliant on hiring additional facilities. Discussions with the Church commission who own all of the land surounding the ground have been ongoing since 2008, we have finally made some head way and there is an offer on the table of an additional 6 acres (approx). Once purchased we will need to make this fit for purpose.

Phase3- New Sports and recreation centre

Phase 3 is the construction of a new Sports and Recreation Centre. the current pavilion was originally built in the 1967 with an estimated lifespan of around 20 years which it has well surpassed. We have extended and renovated it as much as humanly possible and unfortunatly it is no longer adequate for the needs of the club. We are planning to build a new sports and recreation centre with improved facilities and disabled access able to be used by the whole community.

Planning permission for the new centre has now been approved and our focus now turns to fund raising! We have appointed a fund raising committee to oversea this, if you would like to support them or make a donation to the club please contact;
